The Associate in Applied Science in Business and Accounting degree program is for students who want to begin a business career, who seek semi-professional opportunities in the general accounting field or other areas of specialized financial reporting, or who wish to upgrade their knowledge and skills for employment advancement. This program applies to retailing, wholesaling, finance, hospitality, health care, nonprofit, real estate, insurance, construction, promotion and advertising, and transportation and is intended for those who want to enter the workforce. Business managers deal with organization, personnel, record-keeping, sales, production, marketing, payroll, and other tasks. Accounting clerks calculate, post, and verify financial data needed for maintaining accounting records. They also work with office machines and documents such as vouchers, invoices, account statements, payroll, periodic reports, and other records.
AAS in Business and Accounting Degree Requirements
Accounting courses taken as part of an Associate in Arts (AA) degree aligns best with a transfer program for students wanting a career as an accountant. This curriculum is suggested for those intending to complete an AA degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Accountants prepare and analyze financial reports, including tax returns, to provide clients with up-to-date financial records. Employment opportunities are varied, such as general and industrial accountant, cost analyst, controller, tax consultant, Certified Public Accountant, or Certified Management Accountant.

This curriculum is suggested for those intending to complete an AA degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Students interested in Finance can complete courses in Accounting and Business as part of an Associate in Arts degree at HCC then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Finance. Employment opportunities include financial analysis and reporting in corporate enterprises, government institutions, and financial institutions, such as commercial banks, savings and loan associations, insurance companies, and commercial finance companies.
Students wanting a career in some aspect of Management, such as personnel or human resources, production and operations, information systems, small business, or international business can complete an Associate in Arts degree at HCC and then transfer to another institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Management programs focus on both qualitative and quantitative aspects of decision making.
