Yost Gallery Featuring Work by Ceramicist Justin Groth

published January 30, 2020

HIGHLAND, KS - Yost Gallery, located on the main campus of Highland Community College in Highland, Kansas, is showing the artwork of ceramicist Justin Groth from now until February 14.

Justin Groth currently teaches ceramics and sculpture classes at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. Groth graduated from the Ceramics department at Cranbrook Academy of Art and he and his family have resided in Lincoln, Nebraska ever since.

While studying under Anders Ruhwald at Cranbrook, Groth had an increase of interest in ceramic sculpture. He describes his interest as “a means to interpret and relay a complex overlap of design and experience while exploring the necessity of making and designing objects for people to think about and interact with.”

Groth states, “I am interested in the desire to engage and contend with mystery and live with the mysteries as well as the loss of understanding. I find inspiration from everyday forms and strange juxtapositions. Such as a piece of foam drying on a rock, as well as histories and ideas surrounding objects. Humor and my own personal history find their way into my work as I look to use these tools directly and in hidden ways as a way to make the work more accessible so people can engage thoughtfully with the subtly complex work."

Yost Gallery is open to the community Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with no admission fee. There will be a lecture given by Groth towards the end of the showing, anyone in the community who is interested should reach out to Todd Meier at tmeier@highlandcc.edu for information regarding that event.
