Valley Heights Students Learn About Ag Science
published April 17, 2018Highland Community College Western Center Precision Ag instructor Eric Wright and student Emily Lee presented a Colts Afterschool program at Valley Heights in Waterville to grades K-3 and 4-6. This initial presentation was about Ag-Science and included demonstrations of machinery and the value of a drone to area agriculture. The Highland Western Center is going to continue to partner with the Valley Heights school district to do additional presentations and is looking to host district students for a visit during their summer program.
A program call Colts Round-Up Afterschool (prek-12) and Camp Exploration (k-6) are afterschool and summer programs that serve the Valley Heights Schools in partnership with Kansas Reading Roadmap (KRR) and 21st Century Community Learning
Centers (21st CCLC). The program was established to serve students and families in Northeast Kansas in hours beyond the school day.
The Waterville and Blue Rapids communities that are served by these programs are high poverty rural areas without immediate access to secondary educational opportunities. The goal of the programs is to deliver programing to youth that expands their knowledge and experiences beyond the community they live in. By partnering with community colleges, educational programs are presented to the students, allowing them to view possible workforce paths for their future.
Both programs have been going on for over 15 years. They are funded through district funds, when and if available, as well as 21st CCLC funds and KRR.
