The artwork of Lakota artist Sarah Rowe will be on display in the Yost Art Gallery on the campus of Highland Community College from February 8 to 26. Entitled, “Stitch”, Rowe’s exhibit confronts issues regarding self-identity and exploitation, and re-imagines traditional Native American symbology and dream images to fit the narrative of today’s cultural landscape. Drawing from skewed imagery in storybooks and history books, in conjunction with images from historical winter counts, Rowe projects her vision and experience into the mix with an offbeat enchantment.
Rowe’s work challenges societal misconceptions, opening a dialogue about our place as a human family born from a long line of experiences. These issues emphasize the importance of moving forward, while having respect and understanding of our collective past.
Rowe received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Webster University, studying in St. Louis, MO and Vienna, Austria. She is represented by Darger HQ Gallery, an international artist-collective based in Omaha, NE. Rowe co-founded Sweatshop Gallery, an experimental art space and performance venue in Omaha’s historic Benson district. Recent exhibitions include Joslyn Art Museum’s "Art Seen: a Juried Exhibition of Artists from Omaha to Lincoln"; solo show "Vertical Disintegration" for the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts; and solo show "One Little Indian" at RNG Gallery. Her work has been exhibited in several local and regional galleries and is featured in private collections throughout the world.
