The Highland Community College football team fell to the visiting #14 ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A & M Norsemen by the final of 47-14 on Saturday evening.
The Scotties, 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference play, fell behind on the opening Norsemen drive and never seemed to find rhythm on either side of the ball. In just 11 offensive plays, NEO held a 14-0 lead and within another 15 seconds, an errant Scottie pass led to yet another Norsemen score and a 21-0 lead. On the next possession, freshman quarterback Brandon Bergeron (Lafayette, LA) found sophomore wide-out Durwin Jones (Houston, TX) on a 63-yard completion that set up a 2-yard rushing touchdown by freshman running back Jordan Ward (Olathe). Freshman kicker Josh Pasley (Lenexa) added the PAT, making the score 21-7. The remainder of the quarter belonged to NEO as they found the end zone on a 32-yard rush. In the second quarter, the Norsemen produced the games only score with a 28-yard rushing touchdown and a 33-7 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, NEO used a 72-yard drive for another rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 40-7 heading into the fourth quarter. A long NEO rushing touchdown from 81 yards away made the lead 47-7. Late in the quarter, freshman running back Elbert Johnson (Olathe) found the end zone on a 2-yard rush to conclude scoring.
The Scottie running game was held in check, gaining only 16 yards on 24 carries. Highland found success in the air, gaining 331 yards on 31 completions. Freshman receiver Austin Moses (Overland Park) caught 10 passes for 145 yards. Jones had 5 receptions for 92 yards.
The Scotties were led defensively by sophomore linebacker Taylor Shaffer (Wamego) with eight total tackles, including seven unassisted and one for lass. Sophomore strong safety Mike Brown (Oakland Park, FL) had 10 stops, including eight solo tackles.
The Scotties next host Jayhawk foe Dodge City on Saturday, September 7, at 1 p.m. at Kessinger Field. That game will be Parents Day which will feature a Faculty Association hosted reception for HCC parents in the Barber Room of the Stadium Center from 12:15 through halftime and the Annual Wild Dog Ride.
