The Highland Community College men’s basketball team tipped off the 2012-13 season with a 97-47 drubbing at home over the Doane College Junior Varsity on Monday night.
The Scotties jumped out to a 51-23 halftime lead, due in part to forcing 16 Tiger turnovers. In the second half, the Scottie press continued to provide easy scoring opportunities and Highland pulled away for the easy win.
“It was good to see our group in action in a real game,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “With a team completely made of newcomers, we didn’t know if we would actually perform the way we have drilled over the past month. I thought we gave a great effort, but we have plenty of areas that need improvement.”
Freshman James Walker (Detroit, MI) had a tremendous start to his college basketball career with 27 points on 11 of 14 shooting. Freshman Kris Smith (Beaumont, TX) had 14 points and four assists. The lone sophomore on the Scottie squad, LA Pomlee (Davenport, IA), grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and scored six points.
The Scotties next travel to Kansas City Kansas Community College on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9-10, for the Blue Devils Classic. Highland plays Wentworth Military College on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and North Arkansas College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
