Fresh off the most successful season any Highland softball team has experienced, Coach Heidi Jordan welcomed fifteen new faces to add to the talented six returning sophomores from a year ago. The departure of eight sophomores and one freshman left a lot of spaces to fill on this year’s roster.
Returning infielders Raven Nolan (Topeka) and Bailey Dillon (Grapevine, TX) will combine with freshmen Elizabeth Belter (Orlan, CA), Kelli Halder (Olathe), Kaley Pyles (Dekalb, MO), Ashleigh Perry (Gardner), Taylor Zimmerman (Olathe), and Emma Hill (Rea, MO) to fill the infield vacancies. Lindsey Pinkham (Olathe) and Morgan Crenshaw (Belle Plaine), along with sophomores Katie Yoder (Shawnee), and Addie Billinger (Ellinwood) will compete in the outfield for the Scotties. Holly Wilmarth (Maryville, MO), Kellyn Holt (Mulvane), Lucy Toplicker (Olathe), and Taylor Hatfield (Mulvane) will split time between the infield and outfield for Coach Jordan. Jasmine Stewart (Olathe), Paige Crawford (Salina), Taylor Hatfield, and sophomore Lauren Massey (Lawrence) will round out the Highland pitching staff which has produced an All-American in each of the past two seasons. Freshman Allyne Clark (Abilene) and sophomore Jessie Troupe (McLouth) will share the catching duties for the Scotties in 2012.
Coach Jordan believes this may be the most athletic group her program has ever had. “With a lot of new faces comes a lot of excitement. Each one of these freshmen was brought in to this program for a specific reason. Our versatility and athleticism are what will make us tough to beat this year. Last season, we were one injury away from having to play out of position just to compete. This season, with the depth we have, we will be able to absorb any bumps in the road.” This fall, the Scottie softball squad will have matchups against very high level teams such as Missouri Western, Washburn, Central Missouri, and the University of Missouri. “We will need to improve quickly with the fall schedule that we face. I feel playing teams of that caliber is a vital part of our development.” The Scotties first action of the fall will be on Saturday, September 8th when they travel to Concordia to play a five game tournament.
