Softball Earns Share of Jayhawk East Title

The Scottie softball team knew they had a tough task ahead of them last week when they had to travel to #11 nationally ranked Labette Community College. Last season, the Lady Cardinal swept Highland at Scottie Park to earn their first conference softball title. This time, the tide turned, and it was Highland needing a sweep to clinch at least a share of their first ever Jayhawk title.  And a sweep is what they got. Both games were won by the Scotties 1-0 in two hard-earned wins. The first game was scoreless until Jessie Troupe (McLouth) hit a double to right field scoring Megan Dortch (Kearney, MO) from second base with two outs. In the second game, it was once again late game heroics that allowed Highland to pull out the victory. With two outs in the top of the seventh Megan Plouvier (Shawnee) singled to center field to score Raven Nolan (Topeka) from second. Zuzana Kudernatschova (Czech Republic) went the distance on the mound for the Scotties in both games. Kudernatschova allowed only three hits on the day while striking out 16 Cardinal hitters. Megan Dortch finished the day 3-3 with two doubles and three walks.

Highland has now won 21 straight games with their last loss coming back on March 26 to KCKCC. During that stretch, they have outscored their opponents 138-17. Their current win streak is the longest streak the Scotties have ever achieved.  Currently they sit at 43-9 on the season. Those 43 wins break the College record for wins set last season of 38. A combined 81 wins over the past two seasons makes the 2012 sophomore class the most successful class in Highland history. The Scotties have now scored 321 runs on the season to surpass the previous record of 320 set in 2010.

Coach Heidi Jordan could not be more proud of what her team is achieving this season. “This season’s softball squad will undoubtedly be remembered as one the best, if not the best, Highland has ever seen. They have set the goal to break any record the College has, and they are succeeding. The scary thing for our opponents is this group is still not playing as well as they are capable.”

On Saturday, April 28, the Scotties will host Coffeyville in the first round of Region action in a best-of-three series. If the Scotties advance, they will play in the Region finals on May 5-6 in Topeka where they will try to defend their back-to-back Region titles.
