The Highland Community College football team fell to the #13 ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons at home on Saturday afternoon by the final of 49-12.
The Scotties, 1-4 overall and 1-3 in Jayhawk Conference play, continued to struggle on offense, amassing a meager 169 total yards for the game. The high powered offense of the Blue Dragons, ranked second in the nation for total yards, ran up 496 total yards en route to the victory.
Hutchinson used a 10-play opening drive to take a 7-0 lead and quickly made it 14-0 just four minutes later to cap the scoring for the first quarter. Trailing 21-0 in the second quarter, freshman Contereze Pierce (Jonesboro, GA) intercepted a Hutch pass and took it 80 yards for Highland’s first score of the game. The PAT was no good and the score remained 21-6. On the following possession, the Blue Dragons ground out the clock and scored their fourth touchdown of the day with just 46 seconds left in the second quarter, making the halftime score 28-6.
In the third quarter, Hutch took control with a punt return for a touchdown and two strong runs that found pay dirt to push the score to 49-6. In the fourth quarter, the Scotties found the end zone one more time when freshman Desmond McGee (Wichita) finished a spectacular rush from one yard out to make the score 49-12.
The Scotties were led by McGee with 20 yards rushing and 52 yards passing. Sophomore Buddy Lisk (Harveyville) caught five passes for 39 yards.
The Scotties next travel to Coffeyville on Saturday, Oct. 6 for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
