Scotties Score Second Win

The Highland Community College football team broke a four-game losing streak on Monday night with a home victory over the Benedictine College junior varsity by the final of 34-17. 

The Scotties, 2-6 overall and 1-5 in Jayhawk Conference play, led 13-3 at halftime after a first quarter 1-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Desmond McGee (Wichita) and a 9-yard second quarter scoring rush by freshman running back Trey Root (Olathe). In the third quarter, Benedictine tightened the game with a touchdown run to make the score 13-10 in favor of the Scotties. In the fourth, the Scotties took control when freshman Andre McDonald (Nashville, TN) hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from McGee. Moments later, following a fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff, freshman running back Fritz Wilbur (Olathe) scored from three yards out. In the waning minutes of the game, freshman defensive end JP London (Kansas City) took a Benedictine fumble into the end zone from three yards out for a 34-17 Scottie win.

McGee rushed 16 times for 68 yards and one score. He also completed 10 of 20 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown. Fritz rushed 11 times for 24 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore running back Brian Handley (Monticello, AR) had 10 carries for 44 yards. Sophomore Buddy Lisk (Harveyville) caught three passes for 59 yards.

Defensively, the Scotties were led by sophomore linebacker Terell Jordan (Rock Hill, SC) with seven total tackles and one forced fumble. Sophomore linebacker Tevin Hanley (Riverdale, GA) had four sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery for the Scotties. Sophomore Brandon King (Alabaster, AL) had six total stops for the game.

The Scotties finish the season next Sunday, October 28 at Independence Community College. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
