The NJCAA Coaches Association has announced its Academic All American selections for the 2014 school year. The Highland Community College women’s track and field team placed 4th nationally and had eight members earn the honor. Earning All-American status were Kassiday Blevins (Highland), Crystal Hoard (Randolph, MO), Thaina Dos Santos-Jensen (Topeka), Kireston Luptak (Adrian, MO), Jazmine Miller (Richmond, VA), Hannah Olson (St. Joseph, MO), Annie Ross (Olsburg) and Krista Wilgers (Palmer). These selections join three Highland women selected from cross country for a total of 11 Academic All-Americans for the 2013-14 seasons.
“We stress the term student athlete, student first, from the first contact in the recruiting process every year. We want our student athletes to get the best education they can while at Highland. We review time management and working hard in the classroom all year so they understand and appreciate the importance of a good education and managing their time. We also stress that if they work hard in the classroom that will roll over to the track. These young ladies heard the message loud and clear, and I’m proud of them for their earned success,” Coach Tom Bond stated.
The eleven Academic All-Americans is a record high for the women’s cross country and track programs in one season. The Scotties were 3rd in the country in track and 6th in the country for cross country during the 2012-13 seasons.
