Martinez Breaks Highland XC Record at Fort Hays

The Highland Community College men’s cross country team ran Saturday morning at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open Meet finishing in 13th place as a team.

The Scotties, currently ranked 15th in the nation, finished with 361 team points. Adams State won the team title with 33 team points. Naseem Haje from Adams State won the individual title with a time of 24:19.10.

The Scottie harriers were led by freshman Brian Martinez (Pasadena, TX) for the sixth consecutive time this season. Martinez finished in 35th place with a Scottie record-setting time of 25:35.00, beating the previous HCC record of 26:21 that was set by John Farlinger in 2000.  Sophomores Brett Simshauser (Cuba, MO) and Seth Parres (O’Fallon, MO) were the Scotties second and third place finishers. Simshauser finished in 78th place while Parres was the 80th place runner. Freshman Rey Quinones-Velez (Clermont, FL) finished in 83rd place while sophomore Chris Babel (Hiawatha) finished in 85th place.

The Scotties are off until Monday, October 28, when they compete at the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships held at Westar Prairie Ridge Course in Hutchinson, Kansas.
