The Highland women’s basketball team took its first road trip of the season to play Ellsworth Iowa in Iowa Falls and came away with a 73-51 victory. The Scotties jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and never looked back. “We were concerned with this being our first road trip and traveling so far with so many new faces. Road games are always tough, and Ellsworth has been very good at home,” stated Scottie Head Coach BJ Smith.
The Scotties led 24-16 with seven minutes to play in the first half and stretched their lead out to 40-26 on an Ashley Torres 3 pointer right before the halftime buzzer. “Defensively, we are working on doing several things, and we just aren’t quite there yet, but we do see lots of improvement,” stated Smith.
The Scotties stretched their lead out to 65-35 at one point in the second half with multiple people scoring. “I thought the key was our post defense. They had a huge size advantage in the paint, and our kids really took that away,” said Smith.
Newcomer Carina Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led all scorers with 18 and was followed by Ryann Bowser (Holton) with 11 and Ashley Torres (Morovis, Puerto Rico) with 10. The women will be back in action Monday, November 12, when they face Benedictine.
