On a day the Highland Community College women’s basketball team moved up to number eight in the National NJCAA poll, they also got their 13th win of the season over Kansas City Kansas Community College 81-34 to push their record to 13-1 and 2-1 in the Jayhawk Conference.
Highland once again led from start to finish and went to halftime leading 39-17. "Our pressure caused them a lot of problems early, and we did a good job of capitalizing on their turnovers," said Head Coach BJ Smith. The second half was much of the same as the Scotties extended their lead to the final margin of 81-34. Highland created 27 turnovers and had six blocked shots with Alison Cole (Long Island) and Jaaron Kassanavoid (Lawson, MO) with three apiece.
Kathryn Thomas (Flint MI) led all scorers with 21, followed by Royce Shields (Kansas City) and Janelle Saling (Lathrop, MO) with 12 and 10. "We have a lot of season left and peaking at the right moment will be our goal in the end. But considering where we started and where we are, at least we know why we worked so hard in the pre-season,” Smith said.
The Scotties return to action Saturday in the friendly confines of Allen Field House when they host Labette at 1:00.
