As it enters the holiday break, for the second straight year, the Highland Community College women’s basketball team is off to a 16-0 start and currently ranked 3rd in the NJCAA national poll.
The Scotties have wins over 14th ranked Cowley College and 19th ranked Central College, but the women from Highland have not had a game closer than 16 and are averaging winning by 43 points per game. They are currently averaging 91.8 points per game, which places them 2nd in America in scoring. “Our philosophy has always been defense first, but sometimes that defense turns into offense,” stated head coach BJ Smith.
Highland is currently 74-10 since 2011, which puts them at an 89% winning percentage over that period. “I think polls and statistics are great for our fans and for people to talk about, but I’m more concerned with our ability to work every day in practice and improve daily,” said Smith. “Highland athletics sets new standards every day, and we are trying to be another part of the success going on here.”
Highland will return to action January 7th when they travel to Bethany College.
