Highland Women Get Conference Road Win

Coming off a tough home loss to open the conference season, the tenth ranked Highland Community College women's basketball team got a gigantic Jayhawk Conference road win, 62-58 against the eleventh ranked Independence Community College Saturday in Independence. The Scotties led wire to wire but could never separate from the Pirates as the lead was never larger than eight and was tied several times. "Our bench was much better tonight, and we had several players contribute.  Our bench was probably the reason we won the game," stated Head Coach BJ Smith.

The Highland women took a 32-29 lead into the locker room at halftime after leading 18-10 at one point in the first half. "With so many freshmen playing such a big role, we struggle to maintain intensity sometimes," Smith said. The Highland lead never got any larger than six in the second half and the game was tied with three minutes to play at 54, but two free throws and a layup by freshman Riley Bowser (Holton) put the Scotties up by four. Indy made two free throws to close it to two with two minutes to play. Freshman Kathy Thomas (Flint, MI) made a layup to stretch the lead back to four.  After an Indy basket, Thomas she made two free throws to give the Scotties the win by a final margin of 62-58.

Jaaron Kassanavoid (Lawson, MO) and Sharniece Lewis (Warrensburg, MO) led the Highland women with 14 points apiece.  Bowser had 13 and Thomas had 12.  "One of our goals when the season started was that it would mean something to be a Highland Scottie.  That goal is starting to come to fruition, but we have a lot of season left and we need to make sure we handle success,” said Coach Smith.
