Every year, thousands of high school and college students descend on Kansas City to compete in a variety of technical areas at the National SkillsUSA Championships. These competitions are designed to allow students to showcase their work skills in 100 technical areas such as auto body repair, culinary arts, restaurant services, and sustainability solutions. For the first time in recent memory, a student at the Highland Community College Technical Center -- Dustin Mortsolf of Lansing -- took first place out of 44 entries in the High School Division of the Diesel Equipment Technology contest. In addition to his gold medal, Mortsolf won over $6,000 in tools and equipment he can use to continue his education and future career. Fred Moranz, Marvin Gaither, and Dale Swenson are Mortsolf’s Diesel Technology instructors.
Only first place winners on the state level qualify for the National SkillsUSA Championships. The Championships have been held in Kansas City for the past 20 years, but will move to Louisville, KY, after next year’s competition. In addition to Mortsolf, two other Highland Technical Center students did well at the Championships. Aaron Brown of Easton took 17th place out of 42 entries in the High School Division of the Electrical Construction Wiring contest. Logan Blakley of Atchison took 12th place out of 36 entries in the High School Division of the Automotive Refinishing Technology contest.
