Highland Community College head softball coach Heidi Jordan was hoping to see big things out of her team during the unofficial fall season. A very tough fall schedule was put together to challenge her sophomore laden squad. The Scotties faced Division I opponents Missouri, Kansas, and UMKC, Division II opponents Missouri Western, Washburn, and Central Missouri. “We faired very well this fall,” stated Coach Jordan. “Anytime we can play a team like SEC power Missouri and have the opportunity to win the game in the late innings, we have to feel good about what is happening with our team.”
The Scotties also traveled to Concordia to play five games against NJCAA and NAIA teams. Coach Jordan said she was very anxious to see if her team would be able to carry their high level of play into those games. “Any team can get up to play Missouri or Kansas. The challenge is taking the high level of play into games with teams we will play the rest of the year. It is very easy to have a big letdown.” There would be no worries for the Scottie offense as they outscored their opponents 70-6 en route to a perfect 5-0 record on the weekend.
The Scottie freshmen will be asked to play a major role for Highland this spring. “Our sophomores will not take anyone by surprise. Everyone knows how good they will be. We need our freshmen to play big roles in our offense to make everyone more productive,” stated Jordan. Taylor Phillips (Ashland, MO) and Kate Smith (Wichita) were brought in to bolster an already impressive pitching staff. ShyAnn Robinson (Atchison) will share catching duties with sophomore Allyne Clark (Abilene). Sydney Buster (Wamego), Madison Demel (Goddard), and Brie Newman (Omaha, NE) will add much needed depth on the Scottie infield. Outfielders Jordann Smith (Andover), and Emily Clontz (Grapevine, TX) round out a talented freshman class. “Several of our freshmen had a great fall season. We will need them to continue to get better every day. If that happens, this team is capable of great things.”
