Highland Rolls Fort Scott to Open Season

The Highland Community College football team opened the 2013 season in style with a 48-31 road victory over the Fort Scott Greyhounds.  For Coach Ryan Held’s second year Scotties, it marks the first win over Fort Scott since the 2005 season and most points since the 1989 shootout with Fort Scott when Highland prevailed 63-62.

Highland, winning its first opening game since defeating Ranger College in 2006, looked impressive on both sides of the ball. The offense, under the direction of freshman quarterback Brandon Bergeron (Lafayette, LA) gained 556 total yards and 20 first downs.  Bergeron completed 29 of 37 passes for 325 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore tight end Brennan Boland (Overland Park) and wide-out Desmond McGee (Wichita) were Bergeron’s favorite targets with six receptions each. Boland scored two touchdowns and picked up 107 yards receiving while McGee gained 60 yards and one score. On the ground, sophomore Marlon Mitchell (Overland Park) gained 64 yards on 16 carries. Bergeron rushed for 62 yards on 10 carries. Overall, the Scotties rushed for 231 yards and two touchdowns.

In the first quarter, the Scotties scored twice with Bergeron to Boland from 34 yards and 14 yards. In the second quarter, Bergeron hooked up with McGee from 15 yards away to give the Scotties 21 first half points. In the third quarter, the lone Scottie score came with a 19 yard rushing touchdown by freshman Jordan Ward (Olathe). The Scotties dominated the fourth quarter, scoring early with a Bergeron pass to freshman Austin Moses (Overland Park) and later in the quarter, an eight yard fumble recovery by sophomore linebacker Brandon Lockwood (Largo, FL). Highland would conclude its scoring with sophomore Dustin Lara (Sabetha) taking the ball to the end zone from 41 yards away on his lone rush of the afternoon. Freshman kicker Josh Pasley (Lenexa) made six of seven PAT attempts for the game.

The Scotties were led defensively by sophomore linebacker Taylor Shaffer (Wamego) and freshman linebacker Brandon Peters (Mobile, AL) with 12 tackles each. Peters had 11 solo stops and one forced fumble while Shaffer had seven solo tackles, one quarterback hurry, and one stop for loss. Sophomore cornerback Contereze Pierce (Jonesboro, GA) had one interception for 26 yards. The Scotties recovered three Greyhound fumbles on the day, one for a score.

The Scotties next host #14 ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on Saturday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. on Kessinger Field.
