The Highland Community College women's 4x800 meter relay team currently holds the fastest time in the nation by a margin of three seconds after running a 9:10.58, bringing home 1st Place in the KJCCC/Region VI and crushing the 15-year old Highland record by 70 seconds. The Scotties finished the race 80 meters ahead of the 2nd place finishers.
"It was all business before the race," commented Head Track Coach Tom Bond. "When the gun went off, we were not going to be denied. It was the most impressive relay run I have ever seen."
The 4x800 team is made up of sophomore Alison Nutt (New London, TX), freshman Coshan Campbell (Bahamas), freshman Kira Williams (Topeka), and sophomore Kyelah Hodges (Monticello, AR). Each received All-Conference and All-Region honors for their 1st place victory. They will have one more meet to remain atop the standings in the 4x800 on May 18-20 in Hutchinson at the Outdoor National Championships.
"To be ranked Number 1 in the nation is great, but we would like to finish this thing out and bring home a National title”, said Bond.
The Scotties also had two other KJCCC East Conference Champions over the weekend as the team competed in the Outdoor Region VI/KJCCC Championships in Arkansas City. Kira Williams won the Jayhawk East and set a new school record in the 400 meter hurdles and Zekarias Philipo (Houston, TX) took 1st place in the men's steeple chase. Williams finished 2nd overall in Region VI while Philipo finished 3rd in the Region.
These student-athletes finished in second place in the KJCCC East earning them 2nd Team All-Conference:

John Brunner (SO, Elbing) - 10,000 Meter
Men's 4x400 Meter Relay (Fred Campbell, Curtis Allen, Xavian Powel, Yannick Taviere)
Three more Highland records fell over the weekend at the Region VI/KJCCC Outdoor Championships;
Kira Williams- 400 Meter hurdles (1:03.81) -- Old Record (Jasmine Miller 1:04.63 - 2014)
Kyelah Hodges- 800 Meter (2:15.08) – Old Record (Shannon Daily 2:16.94 - 1991)
Women's 4x800 Meter Relay (Nutt, Campbell, Williams, Hodges - 9:10.58) – Old Record (Williams, Williams, Bryce, Palmer - 10:20.86 2002)
The Scotties placed seven athletes on the All-Region Teams and 27 on the KJCCC All-Conference Teams this past weekend. The Scottie track squad will now gear up for Outdoor Nationals, happening May 18-20 in Hutchinson.
