All of the academic and technical programs at Highland Community College operate under accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. Several of the College programs also seek to achieve accreditation with specific program-related agencies to further enhance their status within their fields. Such is the case with the nursing program at the College, which is already approved by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Under the leadership of Cynthia Jacobson, Director of Nursing for the College, the program of Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (ADN) has achieved Candidacy status with the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing is the entity that is responsible for the specialized accreditation of nursing education programs. The ACEN supports the interests of nursing education, nursing practice, and the public by the functions of accreditation. Accreditation is a process by which non-governmental associations recognize educational institutions or programs that have been found to meet or exceed standards and criteria for educational quality. Accreditation also assists in the further improvement of the institutions or programs as related to resources invested, processes followed, and results achieved. This additional program accreditation is voluntary and is a sophisticated process that requires years of preparation, with at least three years of program-related data.
The Highland Community College Nursing Program offers the ADN, an LPN to RN Completion Program, and the Practical Nursing Program at the College’s Atchison location. Highland’s graduating nursing classes of 2014 achieved excellent first time pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for RNs and PNs. The first time pass rate was 100% for the LPN to RN Completion Program and 97.4 % for the Practical Nursing Program.
