The 12th ranked Highland Community College men’s cross country team continued their record-breaking season in high fashion as they were the top NJCAA school for the third straight meet, this time at the Emporia State Invitational. The men finished 5th overall in the 19 team Invitational, including beating the host, Emporia State, for the first time in school history. Three top 20 performances led the way for the Scotties, with Brian Martinez (Pasadena, TX) 9th, Ronnie Carroll (Wilmington, DE)18th, and Rey Quinones-Velez (Clermont, FL) 19th. Rounding out the rest of the scoring was Corey Scott (Pasadena, TX) in 34th, Christian Salazar (San Antonio, TX) 42nd, Fernando Lucero (Albuquerque, NM) 52nd, and Coner Reed (Dadeville, AL) 54th.
Head Coach Chad Clevenger was very happy with his team’s performance. “We got out early and set a tone for the race. We were competitive from start to finish, and that’s what we like to see. I felt we made a statement today to the state and NJCAA. We are very proud of our distance program, and know that when we step to the line, we are one of the top programs out there. We feel that we have one of the best programs in the NJCAA and also one of the best distance programs in the state of Kansas.”
The men’s team will travel to the University of Kansas on Saturday to run in the Rim Rock Collegiate Classic at 9:00 am. The meet already has teams committed to compete like KU, Cal State Fullerton, Rice, New Mexico State, Missouri State, UMKC, Oral Roberts, and several others. Flotrack.com will be on site to cover this meet.
