The Highland Community College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat Invitational Meet last Friday evening.
The Scottie men finished third as a team with 67 points. The Scottie women were the fourth place team with 79 points. Host Northwest Missouri State won both the men’s and women’s team titles with 15 and 19 points respectively. Unattached runner Matt Pohren was the top finisher in the men’s race with a time of 25:35. Northwest’s Brittany Poole took the top honors in the women’s race with a time of 22:52.
The Scottie men, ranked 10th in the nation, were led by freshman Seth Parres (O’Fallon, MO) with a ninth place finish in 27:26. Sophomore Brett Simshauser (Cuba, MO) had his best day as a Scottie with a 17th place finish in 28:19. He was closely followed by freshman Miguel Hernandez (Del Valle, TX) in 18th place in 28:20. Sophomore Keith Edmonds (Easton) ran the course in 29:41, good for 23rd place overall. The final scorer for the Scotties was sophomore Tim Borger (Eudora) with a 24th place finish in 29:49.
The Highland women, ranked seventh in the nation in the latest NJCAA Division I Hill ‘N Dale rankings, were paced by sophomore Mary Kate Taylor (Chillicothe, MO) with a ninth place finish in 24:44. Freshman teammate Hannah Olson (St. Joseph, MO) was the Scotties second runner for same number of weeks with a 13th place finish in 25:15. Freshman Mandy Wilson (Auburn) outsprinted fellow freshman Crystal Hoard (Randolph) to finish in 26th place while Hoard finished in 27th place overall. Freshman Veronica Gallegos (St. Marys) scored for the first time as a Scottie with a 31st place finish in 28:06.
The Scotties are on the road again next Saturday, September 15, at the famed Woody Greeno Invitational Meet in Lincoln, NE, hosted by the University of Nebraska. The meet is set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
