Highland Community College first-year and first-time head coach Aaron Arnold won’t forget the 29-26 loss at Garden City on Saturday night anytime soon. Despite taking a loss in his first game, Arnold began his playing career at Garden City before finishing at Kansas State.
The Scotties took an early 3-0 lead with a field goal by Josh Pasley, a sophomore from Lenexa, with 10:25 left in the first quarter. Four minutes later, Garden City tied the contest at 3-3. With 1:56 left in the opening quarter, Isaiah Ming (sophomore, Kansas City) rushed 30 yards for a touchdown and a 10-3 Highland lead. The Pasley PAT was good. A late Garden City score knotted the game at 10-10 going into halftime.
To start the third quarter, Garden City quickly claimed a 17-10 lead on a long touchdown pass. The Scotties quickly answered with Cedrix Reed, a freshman from Foley, AL, running for a 6-yard score. Again, Pasley connected on the PAT and the game was tied at 17-17. With four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Garden City again took the lead on a short run. The PAT, however, was blocked by the Scotties and returned for a two point conversion, making the score 23-19 in favor of the Broncbusters.
With 9:56 to play in the game, Highland took a 26-23 lead on a 30-yard fumble return by Rasheed Brady (freshman, Overland Park), but the Scotties simply could not keep Garden City from answering with a game winning touchdown with 6:56 to play.
The Scotties were led by sophomore quarterback Kyle Todd (Elizabethtown, KY) with 190 yards on 23-45 passing. Ming led all Scottie rushers with 39 yards on five carries. Freshman wide receiver Bob Pugh (Foley, AL) was Todd’s favorite target, catching six balls for 61 yards.
Defensively, the Scotties were led by sophomore defensive back Willie Fleming (Fort Myers, FL) with six total tackles, including four solo. Freshman linebacker Tyree Horton (South Dade, FL) had two sacks and one interception for Highland.
The Scotties next play at Benedictine College on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 12:00 p.m. against their junior varsity squad.
