The fourth defensive touchdown of the year sealed another victory for the Highland Community College football team (4-2) over Jayhawk Conference foe Independence Community College (o-5), 27-15. The first half was low scoring as Indy scored a touchdown but missed the extra point, the Scottie defense held once the Pirates got to the red zone, and Highland had a 36 yard field goal from Josh Pasley (Lenexa), who continues to have a good year. So, the Scotties went to halftime trailing 3-6.
The third-quarter proved that the Scotties are for real when running back Tremaine Batten (Dunedin, FL) took off for a 50-yard touchdown run and Pasley kicked his second field goal of the game, this one from 24 yards. The Pirates also had a field goal, and the Scotties held a 13-9 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Freshman quarterback Danten Cosentino (Shawnee Mission) followed his recent strong play with an eight yard touchdown pass to Troy Grant (Tampa, FL) to make the score 20-9. Independence pulled within five with a touchdown and had the ball with a chance to win, but Scottie linebacker Zach Haynes (Mulvane) intercepted and ran it back to seal the Scottie victory. Haynes’ pick six was the third in a row and fourth for the season for the Scottie defense.
The Scotties return home for a Homecoming game and host the 2-3 Iowa Central Tritons on Saturday, October 11, for a 1:00 kickoff of Kessinger Field.
