Elizabeth Brey, Director of Medical Coding at Highland Community College, has been appointed to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) National Advocacy and Policy Council.
AHIMA is a national, non-profit association of health information management professionals with more than 103,000 members. The National Advocacy and Policy Council is composed of 23 members who serve a staggered two-year term.
As stated on AHIMA’s website, “The purpose of the AHIMA National Advocacy and Policy Council is to provide leadership to AHIMA’s Component State Associations (CSA), delegates and other leaders in the public policy and advocacy domain as well as advocate for the Health Information Management (HIM) profession.”
This year, the committee has been working hard to provide subject matter expertise on federal legislation, regulatory comments, and public policy positions that impact HIM professionals.
“I am honored to serve on this national committee and be part of the work that AHIMA is accomplishing,” Brey said. “This committee has already met three times in January to create and submit comments to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Office for Civil Rights (OCR).”
Brey holds a Doctor of Law from Washburn School of Law and completed undergraduate work at Kansas State University and Highland Community College. In addition, she is certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) and is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), professional certifications governed by AHIMA.
“The professionals on this committee come from all different areas of HIM, and this is an excellent learning opportunity for me,” Brey said. “Meanwhile, I hope to share the successes and struggles that our rural facilities encounter while striving to meet federal regulations.”
