Highland CC Students Honored at Phi Theta Kappa Kansas/Nebraska Regional Convention

The Highland Community College chapters of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Alpha Zeta Gamma (Highland), and Beta Nu Omega (HCC Regional Centers and Online Chapter) attended the Kansas/Nebraska Regional Convention in Wichita, Kansas on March 1-3 and returned with an impressive number of awards. 

 

Five-Star Chapter

The Alpha Zeta Gamma chapter was honored as a Five Star Chapter for the fourth year in a row. This rating is based on activities and accomplishments from the chapter.

 

2019 REACH Chapter

Both Alpha Zeta Gamma and Beta Nu Omega were recognized for excellence in the area of membership development.

 

Five-Star Competitive Edge

PTK’s online program, Competitive Edge, teaches members resume building skills, communication skills, etc., as well as provides information about Phi Theta Kappa. Alpha Zeta Gamma members earning the Five-Star level were Tara Collins, Kendra Koch, and Madison Oler, Chelsea Barnhardt, Raymond Clark, and Molly Porter.

 

Five-Star Advisor Plan

PTK’s online program, Five Star Advisor Plan provides information about PTK to chapter advisors. Advisors Margy Heddens and Harry Moeller with Alpha Zeta Gamma and Lisa Bellamy with Beta Nu Omega are Five-Star advisors.

 

Alpha Zeta Gamma chapter president, Tara Collins earned the PTK Alumni Association Scholarship.

 

Beta Nu Omega’s Shelby Spradling created the art for the conference’s shirt.

 

Regional Hallmark Awards for Alpha Zeta Gamma

Service Award – 1st

Sister Chapter Award (with the Tau Theta chapter of Labette CC) – 1st

Yearbook Award – 1st

Great Idea Award – 3rd

Distinguished College President – Dave Reist

- President Reist will also receive the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Convention on April 5 in Orlando, Florida.  These awards are given to retiring college presidents who have shown strong support of student success on their campus by recognizing academic achievement, leadership, and service among high-achieving students over the course of their career.

Distinguished Alumnus Award – Katherine Wist – 2nd

- Katherine was Alpha Zeta Gamma chapter president in 2017-18 academic year.

Achievement in Art Award – Drawing/Painting, Kendra Koch – 1st

Achievement in Art Award – Drawing/Painting, Madison Oler – 2nd

Achievement in Art Award – Drawing/Painting, Tara Collins – 5th

Achievement in Art Award – Ceramics/Sculpture, Kendra Koch – 4th

Achievement in Art Award – Ceramics/Sculpture, Tara Collins – 5th

Achievement in Literature Award – Creative Writing, Chelsea Barnhardt – 5th

 

Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for students attending community and two-year colleges, is focused on scholastic achievement and service to community and campus. Membership is based on high grade point averages, among other criteria.
