Highland Alums Earn Scholar Athlete Honors

Former Highland Community College softball standouts Katelynn Smith, class of ‘15 and Katy Rae Nordman, class of ‘16, have earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete honors after the 2016-2017 season at their four-year institutions.

Athletes who achieve a 3.5 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale are recognized each year as NFCA Scholar Athletes. Smith was one of seven on Newman's list and Nordman one of six for the Hornets’ program.

Both Smith and Nordman had great careers while at HCC, earning 1st Team All-Conference their sophomore years. Smith and Nordman played one season together at HCC. In that year, they helped the team to a KJCCC Championship and finished the season with a 41-8 record.  Both helped lead their teams to a Region VI Championship and National Tournament appearances.

Smith just finished up her playing career at Newman University, while Nordman will be playing in her senior season at Emporia State University this year.
