Even when she applied for a position at Highland Community College, Hiawatha resident Stacy Simmer had ideas of how the College could have a greater presence in area communities. As the Administrative Assistant in the office of Institutional Advancement at the College, she is now in a position to implement her ideas. A previous participant in Hiawatha civic activities, Simmer saw the opportunities available in Hiawatha’s various events around Halloween.
Starting with the use of the College’s parade vehicle, a totaled Toyota FJ that was restored by the Colleges auto tech and auto collision programs, Simmer added Sam, the Scottie mascot, and enlisted volunteers to help her hand out the candy to Hiawatha area youngsters at the Trunk or Treat event. During the event, she was able to share her enthusiasm on the KNZA remote. The next day, in spite of the wet weather, Simmer was ready to use those same resources in both Halloween parades, adding to the College presence created by the Scottie softball squad.
