Fourth Quarter Dooms Highland against Garden City

The Highland Community College football team took a 17-14 lead into the fourth quarter but just couldn’t keep the Garden City Community College Broncbusters out of the end zone and fell at home by the final of 28-17.

The Scotties, 1-6 overall and 1-5 in Jayhawk Conference play, continued their struggle to move the football on offense. The first Scottie touchdown came in the first quarter by way of special teams when freshman Marwin Evans (Milwaukee, WI) took a Garden City kickoff to the house from 86-yards out to bring the score to 7-6 Broncbusters. The PAT was no good. At halftime, the Scotties trailed 14-6 but came roaring back in the third quarter to take the lead. Sophomore linebacker Dalton Marcotte (Eskridge) picked up a Garden City fumble and returned it for a Scottie touchdown and the two-point PAT converted to knot the score at 14-14. Later in the quarter, sophomore Gary Flack (Leavenworth) connected on a 35-yard field goal to give the Scotties the lead.

Freshman quarterback Desmond McGee (Wichita) led the Scotties with 47 yards rushing on 16 carries. He also connected on seven of 15 passing attempts for 65 yards. Freshman wide-out Andre McDonald (Nashville, TN) caught two passes for 19 yards. Freshman Shunquez Stephens (Flowery Branch, GA) also caught two balls for 14 yards.

On defense, the Scotties were led by freshman defensive back Tyrell Curry (Rock Hill, S.C.) with 10 total stops and two passes defended. Sophomores Brandon King (Alabaster, AL) and Terell Jordan (Atchison) each had seven tackles apiece.

The Scotties next host Benedictine College’s junior varsity team on Monday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. on Kessinger Field.
