As part of its Arts at the Barn cultural series, Highland Community College will be presenting Bard at the Barn when the Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is performed on June 26, 27, and 28 at 7:30 pm at the Klinfelter Farm. This production will be staged inside the Klinefelter Barn and the public is invited free of charge.
Life is short. The complete works of Shakespeare are long. To the rescue, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a play that parodies the plays of William Shakespeare, with all of those plays being performed in comically shortened or amalgamated form by only three actors. Three guys, one dead playwright, and 37 plays, all in under two hours. In this universally acclaimed theater experience, three actors under the direction of Highland’s theatre director Sam Smith, manage to compress the complete works of Shakespeare into about an hour and 40 minutes of high-speed over-the-top hilarity. Knowledge about Shakespeare's works is helpful, but not at all necessary. All that is needed is time enough to watch and someone to dial 911 in case you pass out from laughing so much.
According the Los Angeles Times, if you “imagine all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays as written by Reader’s Digest, acted by Monty Python, and performed at the speed of the Minute Waltz,” you’ll have a sense of what to expect with this performance. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1987 and later played at the Criterion Theatre in London, where it ran for nine years. It has become one of the world's most popular shows, playing frequently in a variety of languages.
