39th Annual HCC Art Day Held April 25

Highland Community College hosted its 39^th annual Art Day High School Art Competition on April 25. Gathering high school art students from all over northeast Kansas, creative activities like wheel-thrown pottery, sidewalk chalk and self-portrait competitions and virtual reality painting were spread all over campus. Winners were chosen in each area as well as for the juried exhibit by judges Renne Beggs, art educator in St. Joseph, Missouri and Paul Hemmeria, the art department head at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

 

“Art Day consist of a juried art competition, professional artist workshops, and various creative activities designed to challenge and enlighten participating students,” commented Sam Perkins, Instructor of Art and Graphic Design at Highland.

 

The 2019 event brought over 610 students and art educators to the Highland campus from 43 high schools in Highland Community College’s nine-county service area.

 

Alexis Clements, Instructor of Art and Photography said, “the competitive exhibition is designed to recognize artistic talent at the senior high school level within the Highland service area. The whole experience is an excellent opportunity for students and art educators to not only explore Highland but also view the creative efforts of their contemporaries and colleagues.”

 

The annual Art Day event is coordinated by Highland art faculty; Sam Perkins, Alexis Clements, and Todd Meier.
